Glen Affric Visitor Facilities

Glen Affric is a very special place and has been described as "the most beautiful glen in Scotland".

This project followed on from the Sustainable Guidelines written for the Forestry Commission Scotland. The challenge with this beautiful site at the end of the road in Glen Affric, one of the last areas of ancient Caledonia Pine Forest, is that in summer the source of the water runs dry and in winter it freezes. There is also no electricity available. The design is, therefore, off-grid and employs composting toilets with photovoltaic panels powering the extractor fan. The octagonal green oak frame building sits on top of a stone base enclosing the composting tanks.
